CUYAMEL hydroelectric plant

This hydroelectric project uses water from the Frio River through a lateral intake structure with a 16 m high concrete dam, bottom discharge gate and a sediment removal system. This is a novel underground pressure desander using a special slotted pipe for sediment extraction. Water is led by a conduit system comprising a tunnel and a pressure line, the latter made of reinforced fiberglass polyethylene. The powerhouse features two Francis turbines.

Features an underground pressure sand trap unique in Central America.

CARBON Engineering was hired by the project owner COHCUY S.A. for the pre - feasibility and feasibility studies , final design and construction plans for all civil works of the project, including the floodgates. Follow-up visits were also made during construction.
